    CEO and President

    Kenneth Mendez is the CEO and President of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Since joining AAFA, he has led the organization in establishing a new multi-year strategic plan that emphasizes reducing the impact of asthma and allergies on the underserved and tripling the size of AAFA’s online asthma community. The new strategic plan’s vision is for AAFA to be recognized as the most trusted ally serving the asthma and allergy community. He served as an External Reviewer for the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review’s (ICER) asthma assessment and patient advocacy expert for ICER’s review on emerging peanut allergy therapies. In addition, he leads communications with the US Department of Health and Human Services on ongoing access barriers to epinephrine auto-injectors.

    Sydney Leibel, MD, MPH

    Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

    Sydney Leibel, MD, MPH, is a board-certified pediatric allergist/immunologist at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at Flinders University in South Australia. In addition to caring for allergy and immunology patients, Dr. Leibel helped develop Rady Children's Allergy Center, and is working with the Pulmonary Medicine, Community Health Work, Psychology, Pharmacy and Social Work Departments to develop a multidisciplinary Severe Asthma Clinic. Through these clinics, he hopes to address social determinants of health and resilience in pediatric populations. Moreover, Dr. Leibel teaches medical students, residents, and allergy/immunology fellows in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

    Assistant Research Professor, Health Policy and Management

    Janet Phoenix, M.D., M.P.H, MS. is an Assistant Research Professor for Health Policy and Management at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She is the Founder and Manager of Healthy Homes Visiting Program, an evidence-based program to reduce exposure to asthma triggers in the home environment. She is also a founding member of the DC Healthy Housing Collaborative, a Coalition of District agencies and organizations whose mission is healthy and affordable housing for all District residents. Dr. Phoenix conducts research in children’s environmental health, with an emphasis on community based participatory methods such as health impact analysis. She currently serves on the Board of the Healthy Schools Network, and Clean Air Partners.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Define strategies to enhance access to individualized care among people of racial and ethnic minorities
  • Identify patients with moderate-to-severe asthma who may benefit from targeted biologic agents based on identification of comorbidities, endotypes, and phenotypes that are associated with underlying T2 pathophysiology
  • Identify the place of T2-targeted biologics in the management of people with moderate-to-severe asthma based on current evidence

TARGET AUDIENCE

The primary target audiences for this activity are pulmonologists, allergists, and immunologists, specialty NPs, PAs. The secondary target audiences are PCPs (including pediatricians), and RNs.

ESTIMATED TIME TO COMPLETE

This activity should take approximately 1 hour to complete.

METHOD OF PARTICIPATION

There are no fees to participate in this activity.
