    Lisa Kobrynski, MD, MPH

    Professor of Pediatrics

    Lisa Kobrynski, MD, MPH is a Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University and a Clinical Immunologist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She founded the Clinical Immunology clinic at Emory, which has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Jeffrey Modell Foundation. The center cares for patients with a wide variety of Primary Immunodeficiencies and other Inborn Errors of Immunity. Since 2000, she has worked closely with the Newborn Screening Branch of the CDC on the Implementation of Newborn Screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). In addition, she has been the principal investigator on many studies of immunoglobulin products used to treat patients with antibody deficiencies and participated in multicenter studies of new therapies such as gene therapy for SCID.

    Mark Ballow, MD

    Professor, Department of Pediatrics

    Mark Ballow, MD is a Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine at John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in the Division of Allergy/Immunology. Dr. Ballow currently serves on the medical advisory committee for the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) and is consulting medical director for the IDF. He is on the editorial boards of Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice and Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He serves on the Data Safety Monitoring Boards for four pharmaceutical Phase III trials and has participated in many Phase III clinical trials for immunoglobulin products. His areas of research interest are primary immune deficiency disorders and immunoglobulin (IVIG) replacement therapy.

    Antoine Azar, MD, FAAAAI

    Antoine Azar, MD, FAAAAI

    Assistant Professor of Medicine

    Antoine Azar, MD, FAAAAI, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Azar also serves as the Clinical Director of the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Johns Hopkins. His areas of clinical expertise include allergic and immunologic disorders, including immunodeficiency disorders, recurrent infections, chronic sinus disease, environmental allergies and drug allergies. As the Tara Sakraida Parker and Richard Parker CIM Scholar, Dr. Azar created the Adult Primary Immunodeficiency Center of Excellence at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Dr. Azar earned his MD from the American University of Beirut, and he completed residency programs at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the American University of Beirut.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The Journey of the Patient with Primary Immunodeficiency Disease: What Frontline Clinicians Need to Know

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize the warning signs of PIDD, including family history and the characteristic clinical picture of recurrent infections
  • Summarize the rationale for an early diagnosis of PIDD and management with IG-replacement therapies
  • Devise strategies to counsel patients regarding different IG formulations
Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapies for PIDD: Clinical Trials and Real-world Evidence to Enhance Diagnosis and Individualize Treatment

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe new diagnosis protocols for PIDD and the place of genetic testing in confirmation of a diagnosis
  • Recognize the differences in formulation, pharmacology, dosing, and administration, along with the clinical efficacy, of available and emerging intravenous and subcutaneous immunoglobulin replacement products for children and adults
  • Apply real-word evidence to clinical decision-making related to immunoglobulin replacement therapy and community-based treatment patterns and outcomes
  • Devise strategies to engage patients and caregivers in shared decision-making to improve care and outcomes for people with PIDD

TARGET AUDIENCE

The primary target audience includes US-based immunologists, pulmonologists, infectious-disease specialists, and specialty NPs and PAs who treat PIDD. The secondary target audience includes PCPs, pediatricians, internal-medicine specialists, neurologists, rheumatologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, specialty pharmacists, and non-specialty NPs and PAs.
